Candace Rose: With summer right around the corner, what's the key to looking well and having great skin?

Dr. Doris Day: "Well, in the summer time we are showing off more of our skin, so it needs a little extra TLC to look its very best. I start with great sun protection and I look for products that multitask because we're all busy. So I look for ones that offer also tone perfection and anti aging along with that all important broad spectrum sun protection as well. So I brought a variety of products from Olay that offer exactly that, and those are great products that you can look for in your local drugstore.

It's important to apply along the whole face, as well as the neck. I see a lot of discoloration on the sides of the neck as well, so when you put your sunscreen start on the outer part of the face, move towards the middle so that you know that you apply enough of it and you cover the whole face and the neck. Any exposed area should really be covered and reapply every few hours if you're out and about, and I don't mean just at the beach, even if you're just going for a walk you need to have sunscreen because that sun exposure is cumulative and so it's important to protect as you go.

Another issue I see a lot in the summer time is issue with shaving. So rule number one: never shave dry. I know if sometimes we're in a hurry, we just want to get it done and get out, but the problem is you get more razor bumps and nicks and cuts when you shave dry and if you're not using the proper razor. So the razor that I brought along today is by Gillette and it's called the Venus & Olay razor and it's great because it has five blades, and it's better to shave towards the end of the shower when your skin is properly hydrated. But with those five blades you really only have to pass over that area one time in order to get that nice close shave and the Olay moisture bar adds hydration as you go so you end up soft and smooth and relatively quickly because you're not doing as many passes. When you get out of the bath or shower pat your skin dry, and that's the best time to apply your moisturizer and sunscreen to get you ready for your day.

One other issue I see a lot more in the summer time too is sweating. And there's some great options in the drugstore for antiperspirants, but more and more of my patients are asking me for natural products so I found one that works. It's at Sephora and it's called LAVANILA and it also comes in fun fragrances like vanilla grapefruit and vanilla lavender, and my favorite is vanilla coconut because I feel like I'm at the beach. But there are some good options there as well if you're looking for something more natural for the antiperspirant department as well.

I think also in terms of sun protection to be sun smart try to wear a hat, wear sunglasses and like I said, make sure you reapply your sunscreen and look for ones that multitask that will give you those anti aging and tone correcting benefits while you're also getting that important sun protection as you go."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

Dr. Doris Day: "For more information you can go to or I will also add that you are what you eat, so make sure you get enough water and also look for berries and nuts. This time of year lots of fruits are in season and those provide antioxidants from the inside that ultimately can help your skin as well."
