Just For Moms Tara Paterson stopped by recently to share advice on planning the perfect Easter party with family and friends, and gift ideas for the kids!
Candace Rose: What's the secret to planning a festive and fun Easter get together?
Tara Paterson: "Well, you know one of the things I like to suggest is (decorating tip wise) is our kids put so much effort into decorating their Easter eggs, they make them all colorful and pretty, maybe they put stickers on them. Often times they get put in the refrigerator and I know in our house we think 'yay egg salad'! But one of the things you can do is actually use those as part of your decor, whether you use them as a centerpiece by putting them in a pretty bowl, maybe even putting grass under them to kind of create a nest type. Or you can use them as place card holders if you're entertaining and write each person's name on them, but then your kids really see that you really appreciate their hard work and it's just a neat little festive trick, if you will."
Candace Rose: Do you have any other tips when it comes to decorating this season?
Tara Paterson: "Well, decorating, you know I typically have a different tablecloth and I have a different tabletop for each holiday and I really do like to celebrate and entertain at the holidays, so that's kind of what I do. You know, you can find a lot of affordable things pretty much anywhere. You can pick up maybe a tablecloth, table runner- something like that. So that's sort of my ideas for decorating. Now I also have a bunch of ideas for Easter gifts that you can give to the kids where you can eliminate some of that candy and the chocolate.
Here I've got new on DVD is "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2". I actually bought my daughter the first one last Easter so I'm excited that we have a second one this Easter. And it's a great movie because it teaches positive messages about life and relationships. If you go to Barbie.com they can learn to do the mermaid dance, so that's really neat. And what girl doesn't love Barbies? So we have a whole line of the Mermaid Tale barbies. This one actually transforms from a mermaid to a surfer. And I know for the people on the west coast that's probably pretty exciting."
Candace Rose: It's raining here so not so much! (laughing)
Tara Paterson: (laughing) "I heard. I know. So then you can watch the movies to entertain them. Another thing in our house- I have two little girls who love Polly Pockets, and I know you're a mom (I'm not but thanks for the compliment :)) so you can appreciate this. This is a Polly Pocket Hangout House, and what I like is that it actually has a stick and play feature where it has little mini suction cups where you can actually stick the furniture in place; you can actually stick the Pollys in place. I don't know about you but if certain things get messed up or are out of place, I can tend to have a daughter with a meltdown so I like that! It's a great feature.
Now this past holiday season these Fijit Friends were a big ticket item. A lot of people just loved them. For the spring season we actually have these little guys and they're called Newbies and they sing- they do duets, and they interact with each other as well as with the Fijit Friends, and they're shaped like eggs so they're perfect for Easter. They come in all the colors- there's purple and blue.
And then finally for our boys, we don't want to forget our boys- I have two. Matchbox has always been a part of our household- this Matchbox Cliff Hanger Fire Station is new this year. What I love about it is it actually affixes to your tabletop so that you're not using up floor space, so it's a great way to keep the toys off the floor; gives the kids a way to kind of play up as opposed to laying on the floor and it will not damage your furniture, because I know moms want to know how is this going to affect my table. So it's a great gift idea."
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
Tara Paterson: "Again, for all my holidays I kind of just try each year to do something a little different in terms of with the food or things like that. I always look for a new recipe to try out- just something. Whether it's a side dish, whether it's an appetizer we always have great fun with that, and then sometimes it gets added to each holiday or sometimes it doesn't. But that's kind of where I go with food. And entertaining wise like I said just find something unique and different for each holiday, and it just keeps it festive and fun."
Candace Rose: And where can we go for more information?
Tara Paterson: "You can go to Mattel.com for information about all these products. And another thing, like you said is in terms of it raining, if you go to Barbie.com or even the Polly Pocket website you can find color pages for the kids to color, they can design fashion- all kinds of things. There's lots of things that they can do to keep them entertained, and it's safe. I think that's important for all of us parents to know- their websites are safe for the kids to be on."
Candace Rose: Where can viewers go for more information on you, Tara?
Tara Paterson: "They can go to JustForMom.com, that's my personal website. And we actually have a cute little craft up there for Easter, they're little nests. You use shredded coconut and you can put little mini eggs in them to create a little birds nest, so that's up there also."
