With the Oscars taking place last Sunday, beauty expert Jenn Falik joined me this week to share the must have beauty products we all need to recreate the glamorous looks we saw on the red carpet!
Candace Rose: What can we do to look red carpet ready?
Jenn Falik: "Looking red carpet ready, a lot of it's about preparation and knowing sort of what kind of look you're going for, and making sure you have the right tools to achieve it. Based on what we saw on the red carpet at the Oscars, formfitting dresses are definitely in- Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Rooney Mara- they all showed off their shape. So if you want to do the same, shapewear is key. Wacoal has a new iPant collection of shapewear that visibly reduces the appearance of cellulite in 28 days by working with your body as you move. It's made of nylons embedded with caffeine, vitamin E, aloe vera and retinol. It's lightweight, moderate control and you can pick this up at department and specialty retailers, and at Wacoal-America.com.
That way you get the body, and the next thing is the skin. I always think of Michelle Williams first when I think of gorgeous skin. With that pixie cut you can really see every inch of her perfect complexion, and Cetaphil's a great option here because it always starts with clean skin, with a good regimen. And this has been around for 65 years. Natalie Portman is just one of the many celebrity fans. Non-soap cleanser doesn't leave any residue of any kind- great if your skin is sensitive and you can use it with or without water, so you really never have an excuse to not take off your makeup before bed. And it's $11.99 at drugstores.
And another cult classic for the body- Johnson's collection of baby oil-based products- under four dollars a pop, it leaves a nice glimmer on the skin. An insider tip that I just learned, that I think is really interesting- if you combine the iconic baby oil and then you also use the creamy oil shea and cocoa butter right when you get out of the shower (use them both) it's going to lock in up to 10 times more moisture than lotion alone or ordinary lotion. Hydrated skin just looks better, so that's a great little tip with some drugstore finds.
And celebs call in the big guns for their makeup for this red carpet occasion. Gwyneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock- they had makeup that was flawless, not overdone at all. Celebrity makeup artists in general really rely on great tools. Dick Page is just one of the fans of Shiseido's amazing tool collection. And they have a foundation brush that was created with the oldest workshop in Japan to make a brush that deposits the perfect amount of foundation every time. It's synthetic bristles, it's cut on a slant and you can use it with any foundation. So no matter if you use something from the drugstore that you love, this is just a way to maximize the way that it looks on your skin.
Another tool that celebrity makeup artists swear by is an eyelash curler, and typically the one I see in their kits is the one from Shiseido. Angelina Jolie had a great, really wide eyed look, and all you need is one squeeze of the eyelash curler. It won't pinch your skin, it gets every lash and really just opens up the eye. And you can find both of these products at Shiseido.com.
And the hair, finally we're getting beautiful, long, flowy gorgeous hair. It's not these big braided updos anymore. Mark Townsend who is dubbed celebrity stylist, worked with Kristen Wiig to create her long lasting waves. And he started out with a dollop of their nourishing whip cream mousse, then he blew dry her hair with a round brush: the frizz free shine cream serum was next after he curled her hair- and he loves this product because you get the nourishment of a cream, but still the shiny finish of a serum. Last step was strength and shine extra hold hairspray- just enough to keep those waves from falling, but you don't want the hair to look stiff so this is great because it would give her movement while still making the style last. And all of these products are available at drugstores now, so you can get the look at home."
