This morning I was joined by Shape magazine's Bahar Taktehchian to discuss National Nutrition month and simple ways we can get in shape and look great by eating well and exercising!
Candace Rose: With March being National Nutrition month, do you have any suggestions on how we can make smarter food choices?
Bahar Taktehchian: "Absolutely. When it comes to diet a lot of us are busy, we're running from place to place; having food from the vending machine; having junk food from fast food sites, and sometimes we don't have the opportunity to cook for ourselves. We're not always getting the proper nutrients and vitamins. So, at Shape we recommend multivitamins and supplements; but if you've ever tried to buy these, you know that it's really, really overwhelming. There are so many choices and so many options, so what do you do? Luckily the makers of Centrum have launched a brand new website- it's called NutritionPossible.com, and this is a free resource. It's a wonderful tool for anybody of any age. Basically you log on and you can take an assessment, and answer some questions about your diet habits, your eating habits, your exercise habits and your health concerns. And at the end of the assessment you get a wonderful road map, and some suggestions on what vitamins to take, and what supplements to take; as well as tips on how to exercise, and what to eat day to day."

Candace Rose: How can we enjoy healthy eating without sacrificing?
Bahar Taktehchian: "Well, it all comes down to making good choices, and making food choices that appeal to you. So for somebody who loves to have french fries, instead of having french fries, why not cut up some sweet potatoes and some potatoes and boil them instead or mash them up and having them that way? Or if you're somebody that tends to gravitate towards food with a lot of sodium, cut back on the salt; use flavors like spices and lemon zest instead. These spices are a wonderful way to add a lot of flavor without adding calories to your meal plan."
Candace Rose: Do you have any tips on setting up an exercise routine for beginners?
Bahar Taktehchian: "In terms of setting up a routine, really the first and most important thing is just to take that first step. If you're somebody who hasn't been to the gym in a while, definitely read magazines like Shape because you'll find tips and exercise moves in there, so you're getting knowledge and resources. If you're joining a gym for the first time, and you can't afford a personal trainer, a lot of those trainers that are there are more than willing to help you with a couple moves here and there. So use resources at the gym that are at your disposal and read, and read, and read- stay knowledgeable because the more you know, the more you can work out effectively."
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
Bahar Taktehchian: "Well if you want to find out more about Centrum's fabulous website, you can go to NutritionPossible.com; and of course Shape.com has great recipes, wonderful fitness tips, and of course diet and nutrition guidelines to follow as well."
