Joanna Saltz, Executive Editor at Seventeen magazine, joined me on Friday to share the top prom trends for 2012, and to discuss Seventeen and David Bridal's 'Sketch Your Prom Dress' contest, giving teens the chance to design their dream dress!
Candace Rose: Can you tell us about the Seventeen magazine and David Bridal's contest giving teen designers the chance to sketch their dream dress?
Joanna Saltz: "This is a fantasy come true. David's Bridal and Seventeen magazine partnered for the 'Sketch your Prom Dress' contest where we invited teens from across the country to submit their design for the dream prom dress, and the winner was Samantha Bryant. She's 17 years old; she's from Fairfax, Virginia, and she created this beautiful sketch that she says was inspired by Van Gogh's 'Starry Night', which I think is such a romantic vision. You can see that the dress was brought to life by David's Bridal, and they created a cobalt blue gown. It has this beautiful, sophisticated black overlay of tulle that's dusted with gold glitter and I just think it's exquisite, and so sophisticated. Can you believe a 17 year old designed this dress?"
Candace Rose: It sounds gorgeous!
Joanna Saltz: "It is. It's beautiful. But you know, we're really seeing a lot of really important prom trends this season. Prom is such an important night for our girls and they want to be able to make a fashion statement, so it's also about bold color, and bright pattern; not being afraid to sort of show off your fashion sense- bright blues, bright purples, lots of jewel tones. But on the same note we're also seeing a lot of ethereal gowns like lots of soft pinks and whites, very Grecian; very, very angelic, and pretty. There's really something there for everyone for prom night."
Candace Rose: What are some of the top silhouettes and lengths we're seeing?
Joanna Saltz: "Well, actually we're seeing a lot of a-line which is so flattering on so many body types, but what I think is one of the most unusual silhouettes is high/low hemline which is higher in the front, and long in the back, and it really gives the girl the opportunity to sort of show off a fantastic pair of shoes. I always love the idea of show off a great accessory, a bright shoe, a very jewel-encrusted sandal. I think it's really great to be able to play with accessories as well."
Candace Rose: And what would you say are the top accessories this year?
Joanna Saltz: "I think the clutch is always really important, something small, not too big. You know, really strong pieces of jewelry- big necklaces. Accessories are an opportunity to take your dress, and your look up a notch. So I think if you can express yourself fashion wise, that way, then definitely go for it."
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional information you'd like to share?
Joanna Saltz: "You can definitely check out this issue of Seventeen magazine, there's tons of prom inspiration in there, as well as the winning dress design."
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information on everything?
Joanna Saltz: "You can go check out Seventeen.com, and this issue of Seventeen magazine."
