Technology expert, Chris Leary joined me recently to share the top tech gifts for everyone on your list! From PC and Mac lovers to smartphone aficionados and more, Chris has you covered!
Candace Rose: What are some of the biggest trends in gift giving?
Chris Leary: "Well, I'll tell you what, I've got some great ideas right here on the table. In a matter of fact I'll start off with- this is kind of a new kind of computer, it's called the Ultrabook and it's the ACER Aspire S3 and they've pretty much done away with waiting. The ACER green instant on technology kind of wakes up your computer from sleep in two seconds. Also it's something they call instant connect gets you on the web in two and a half seconds. This thing is fast, also sleek and slim. It's $899, that's a deal for something like that.
As far as printers are concerned, you know, there's some printers who scan pictures, this printer actually scans 3D objects; it's the HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275. It actually uses a hinged arm to capture six different angles and it uses the HP TopShot technology which combines all these six images into one without using a PC. Here's another thing, you can actually email photos to your printer using ePrint technology; that picture will be waiting right there at home for you, so that's kind of nice.
And if you have a Mac lover on your list or at home, this is a good one too. I'm a Mac lover, so this is kind of new and close to my heart. This is the G-Technology G-Drive slim, it's from Hitachi. It's an ultra thin external hard drive, it's designed to match up with the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air and it's plug and play, it's Time Machine ready, easily fits into your pocket or a stocking. It holds up to 500 GB of storage. Now picture how thin this thing is. There's 500 GB of storage in there, lots of music, videos, photos, documents- whatever you have can fit in there. By the way PC people, that can also be formatted to PC's as well. You can pick that up at the Apple store which I'm sure you've been to as well."
Candace Rose: I stay away from that place!
Chris Leary: "I know, I get in trouble there too. Love it."
Chris Leary: As far as thin, thin seems to be in this year. This is a great one, BlackBerry; very cutting edge. This is their latest phone, it's the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the thinnest BlackBerry ever. It's got a full keyboard which smartphone users absolutely love. It's also got a super responsive touchscreen with amazing visuals. The web browser's two times faster with a powerful new BlackBerry 7OS, so that is really top of the line stuff, and cellphones are always really big around Christmas and all year for that matter.
This little robot looking guy is special, it's actually getting on top of a lot of top lists for gifts this year. This is the Fizz soda maker from SodaStream and it turns water into soda in less than 30 seconds. It's got the patented fizz chip which shows you how fizzy you're making your drinks, it also shows you how much CO2 is left in the tank. It's very fun, it saves you money, keeps you from lugging the bottles and cans from the stores to your car; to your car to your house or whatever, so it's really great. It's a great present for the whole family and SodaStream's giving away a $20 gift certificate for anyone buying a SodaStream maker and that's between now and I think January 16th, so that's kind of nice.
This last one's kind of neat, you can actually get fit and give back at the same time. It's a fun little device, it's called the Striiv and it's a high tech pedometer and it fits in your pocket, so every step counts towards a donation to charity, but at no cost to you. So the more you walk, the more you give. And it uses something called true motion technology, and this sees her running; it knows she's running as opposed to climbing stairs or walking, so it kind of knows the difference. And like I said, every step you take contributes to charity, so it's nice to give back over the holiday season as well, and that's the way to do it."
