With college students heading back to school in a few weeks and many of them leaving for the first time, Sabrina Soto of HGTV stopped by to share her favorite tips on decor, organization and making their first space feel like home!
Candace Rose: What are the first steps college students need to take when back to school shopping?
Sabrina Soto: “Definitely, planning. You need a list. You can customize a checklist online and print it out at the kiosk at Target or at the end of the aisle they already have checklists that are there that you could just tear off and take with you down the aisle. But you definitely need a list to ensure that you’re getting everything you need, you’re staying on budget and you’re saving time.”
CR: What are the latest trends in decor this season?
SS: “You’re going to see a lot of vibrant colors which is great because you can’t paint the room, it’s usually a dull color. This is going to be one of the only places that you can incorporate a lot of personality like bedding and small accessories. So, you want to make sure that color and pattern, all the room essential options are very affordable, very comfortable. And then with bath you can get fast dry towels in bright colors and bath caddies – each for less than $5. And then for kitchen my favorite product is this mini fridge from Emerson, it’s only $90 and what’s so great about it is that you can keep all of your snacks inside but then the outside is actually a dry erase board, so you can put all of your reminders and your to do lists there.”

CR: Do you have any helpful tips when it comes to decorating a small living space?
SS: “It’s all about multipurpose furniture and great storage pieces and organizers. This storage cube is wonderful because it looks great, you can use it as extra seating but you could put all of your clutter inside; and then using bed risers is also a great tip to elevate your bed and then you can fit more storage underneath there or even using a storage caddy like this which is on casters. You can use it for paperwork underneath your desk or you can roll it right up next to your bed and use it as a nightstand.”
CR: How do you make a space really feel like home?
SS: “Small touches like adding softness with an area rug or even just as simple as putting family photos in frames. A lot of times this is the first time a student’s lived away from home, so you still want to have pictures of your family around to make you feel just a little bit more comforted.”
CR: Do you have any tips on organizing?
SS: “Definitely having great organizing – either desk accessories or in your closet; either the hanging shoe and sweater organizer are great not only for shoes and sweaters but you could use them for school supplies, organizers, you could put your iPad in there. You just want to make sure that you use every nook and cranny of your closet.”
CR: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?
SS: “Well, if you need more inspiration you can visit your local Target or go to Target.com/College.”
