Interview: Summer Grilling & Dessert Ideas with Elizabeth Mayhew, Editor-in-Chief of Woman’s Day

Candace Rose: What are some easy and affordable menu ideas for summer parties?

Elizabeth Mayhew: "So, we're starting at the grill because of course given this summer that's where everybody wants to go; but rather than grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, we are grilling pizzas which if you think about it, makes total sense. The open flame of a grill is exactly what you get in a wood burning pizza oven, so you get that same delicious taste and texture but to make it even easier we're using Boboli pizza crusts which come in three varieties – an original, a thin, and a whole wheat which makes it super easy.

    Buy it at any grocery store, you bring it home and all your friends and family to customize it with different toppings whether it be grilled vegetables; cheeses; tomato sauce; pesto; you name it. Super easy, all you do is first put the Boboli on the grill for two minutes on each side just to warm it up, then you can top it; put it back on the grill, close the lid for ten minutes; take it out and you've got a delicious pizza."

CR: How about when it comes to desserts?

EM: "When it comes to dessert take advantage of fresh berries and all of the delicious fruit that's around. The best way to transform it is just by putting a dollop of Reddi-wip on it, it totally transforms the berries. You put them into a dish, and one thing you can do is take tortilla strips; dust them with some cinnamon and sugar; bake them in the oven until they're crisp; put them on top of the berries and then just put some Reddi-wip on it. It's absolutely delicious."

CR: How about when it comes to decor?

EM: "When it comes to decor, my favorite thing to do is to take glass vases that I have (I have tons of them around the house), I just layer them with berries. You fill the vases with the berries, put them down the center of your table; everybody eats dinner; everyone has a good time; the come dessert you just go in. You get a can of Reddi-wip out of the refrigerator, bring it to the table with a big serving spoon and let people dig into the centerpiece; it kind of solves two problems at once."
